Kimberly Hutchison, Partner at Singleton Schreiber in San Diego, was recently featured by NBC 7 in their segment, "ICE Making Fewer Arrests at San Diego Immigration Court, Sources Say" which aired on September 10th.
The report discusses a recent trend of ICE agents arresting individuals outside immigration courtrooms immediately after their hearings, following the expansion of the expedited removal process. This process allows for fast-track deportation without a court hearing and was extended nationwide in January beyond its previous limitation to recent arrivals within 100 miles of the border.
NBC 7 also highlights lawsuits challenging these courthouse arrests, including Ms. Hutchison’s class action lawsuit filed in San Diego.
"The particular space that these arrests are happening is somewhere where someone goes when they try to follow the law," Ms. Hutchison said. "The reason we felt the need to file as a class action is because some of these people don't have attorneys. So, we are hoping to stand up for the importance of the dignity & decorum of the court and due process for people who don't have anyone who can represent them there."
