As concern grows over so-called “forever chemical” contamination, some in New Mexico are taking on chemical manufacturers. As part of a larger legal effort, a law firm is filing a class action lawsuit on behalf of La Cieneguilla and La Cienega residents.

Those communities, near Santa Fe, are near known sites of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. And those man-made chemical compounds have recently been listed as “hazardous” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“This lawsuit is going to be very important to the State of New Mexico, in terms of the environment,” says Brian Colón, the former state auditor and current managing partner of the New Mexico offices of the Singleton Schreiber law firm.
