Explosion and Fire Details

The Smitty’s Supply Explosion released thick black smoke and airborne toxic residues across Tangipahoa Parish. Authorities ordered mandatory evacuations for all residents within a one-mile radius, around 800 people, including families, farmers, and Roseland Elementary students. The evacuation lasted several days while emergency teams fought the fire and monitored air quality.

Smoke plumes deposited oily soot on homes, vehicles, and yards as far as 20 miles from the site. While the fire was largely contained by day two, hazardous substances—including volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs, SVOCs), heavy metals, dioxins, and fine particulate matter—were released, posing serious health risks.

Contaminants have also affected land and water critical to local agriculture and livestock, forcing farmers to relocate animals and leaving the community facing significant health, ecological, and economic uncertainty.

Smitty’s History of Regulatory Non-Compliance

Smitty’s Supply has a troubling record of repeated safety and environmental violations. EPA records show ongoing Clean Water Act breaches every quarter since April 2022, with pollutants including oil, grease, organic carbon, and fecal coliform exceeding federal limits.

OSHA citations include workplace safety violations, such as a fatal accident in 2020 in which an employee was struck by a tractor-trailer during welding work. In 2021, another worker suffered severe burns from hot grease during production line purging. Inspections have also uncovered blocked fire extinguishers and mislabeled chemical containers, indicating inadequate hazard controls.

These persistent violations reveal systemic negligence in handling hazardous materials, protecting workers, and ensuring public health
