Overview
Employee Engagement: JUNE 2026
Immigration Heritage Month
Immigration Heritage Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of immigrants and immigrant families. Their strength, resilience, and determination have helped shape our communities, workplaces, and country.
This month also offers an opportunity to reflect on the many ways immigrants have enriched society through their talents, ideas, service, and diverse perspectives. It is equally a time to acknowledge the challenges many have overcome in pursuit of opportunity, safety, and a better future.
Throughout the month, we celebrate the stories, experiences, and achievements that make our communities stronger and more inclusive. We also reaffirm the importance of respect, belonging, and appreciation for the cultural diversity that continues to inspire connection, innovation, and progress.
Employee Stories📖
Throughout the month, we will share three employee stories that offer heartfelt reflections on immigration journeys and experiences that help strengthen our community.
Sophie Nguyen, CMS Administrator, IT Department
Agnieszka Karcz, Senior Paralegal, Environmental Department
Giselle Zarate, Paralegal, Fires Department

Other June Celebrations
Pride Month was officially recognized in the United States in 1999 through a proclamation by President Bill Clinton, with subsequent acknowledgments by Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. It is a time for celebration, reflection, and activism, honoring the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights while celebrating the community’s contributions to society and culture.
Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month helps educate the public about Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. With approximately 55 million people living with dementia worldwide, this observance is an important opportunity to foster understanding and encourage early detection.
Juneteenth, short for “June Nineteenth,” is a federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19 to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it was not enforced in all Confederate states immediately. In Texas, the last state with a large, enslaved population, freedom was delayed until Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865, and issued General Order No. 3, officially informing over 250,000 enslaved people that they were free.
