This August, we're recognizing Ethics & the Law Awareness Month—a time to refresh our understanding of the ethical responsibilities that guide our work and protect the people we serve. Whether we are communicating with clients, handling confidential information, using technology, or supporting case teams, each of us plays an important role in upholding the standards that define Singleton Schreiber's commitment to integrity, professionalism, and client trust.
👥 Everyone Plays a Part
Legal ethics isn't just for attorneys. Everyone at Singleton Schreiber—paralegals, case assistants, IT, billing, intake, and reception—helps protect our clients and our reputation. This month, we're highlighting some of the everyday habits that keep us on the right side of the rules.
Starting with our duty of confidentiality: nearly everything you learn about a client is confidential, and that duty is owned by all of us. The duty to keep client information confidential doesn't end when a case closes, and it applies even to details that seem harmless. Confidentiality is especially crucial in our online work and document-management practices: using approved tech tools, saving client-related documents in Filevine, responsibly utilizing AI-enabled programs, and pausing before clicking, downloading, or forwarding anything that could expose client or firm information.
Watch out for the unauthorized practice of law. Non-attorney staff play a vital role in client communications, but only a licensed attorney can give legal advice. For example, if a client asks how our contingency fee works, stick to the approved explanation and involve the attorney if the question becomes case specific. So, if a client asks, "What should I do here?"—route it to the responsible attorney.
A few more pointers: Conflict-of-interest checks happen before we take on a new matter, not after. Be alert for wire-fraud red flags, too: if payment instructions suddenly change, verify them through a trusted channel before anyone acts. And before you post about your workday on social media or chat with your friends about a case you're working on, remember that a casual comment can reveal more than you intend—and more than is ethically appropriate.
