CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH & FEBRUARY ACTIVITIES

Happy Black History Month! 🎉

While this is our first year formally recognizing Black History Month as a firmwide initiative, 2026 marks a significant milestone nationwide, 100 years of organized Black history commemoration in the United States.

According to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the 2026 theme is:

“A Century of Black History Commemorations”

This year’s theme honors the long-standing effort to preserve, study, and celebrate Black history as a vital part of American history.

📚 A Brief History

  • 1915: Historian Carter G. Woodson and fellow scholars founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now ASALH), creating a foundation for the formal study of Black history.
Co-founders included George Cleveland Hall, William D. Hartgrove, Jesse E. Moorland, Alexander L. Jackson, and James E. Stamps.

  • 1926: Dr. Woodson established Negro History Week, the first official observance dedicated to Black history.

  • February 10, 1976: During the U.S. Bicentennial, President Gerald R. Ford issued the first presidential message formally recognizing Black History Month.

  • 1986: Congress passed Public Law 99-244, officially designating February as Black History Month in the United States.
