Edison Seeks to Delay Eaton Fire Trial as Victims Demand Reckoning

Gerald Singleton, Managing Partner at Singleton Schreiber, was featured by Daily Journal in an article titled “Edison Seeks to Delay Eaton Fire Trial as Victims Demand Reckoning,” published on October 20, 2026.

Singleton, representing Eaton Fire victims, urged Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Laura A. Seigle to reject Southern California Edison’s request to postpone the first trial. He argued that thousands of fire victims remain without homes and cannot afford further delays in seeking compensation.

Edison is asking the court to move the first bellwether trial from January 25 to June 21, 2027, citing discovery delays and roughly 170 expert deposition sessions. The coordinated wildfire litigation alleges Edison negligently maintained electrical equipment in Eaton Canyon, including a transmission line out of service for decades, leading to the January 7, 2025, fire. About 32,000 plaintiffs are already part of the litigation, and another 20,000 could file before the two-year statute of limitations expires in January. Judge Seigle took the motion under submission.

“

There has to be a balance between the defendants’ desire to delay the reckoning that is coming, and all of their victims.
