Federal health officials are warning consumers to check their fruit after Moonlight Companies, based in Reedley, California, issued a nationwide recall of yellow and white peaches that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The peaches were distributed to stores across the country between September 16 and October 29, 2025, and sold both individually and in multi-packs.

The recall affects conventional peaches only. It does not include organic and Washington-labeled fruit.

Why Is Listeria Contamination So Dangerous?

Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can cause severe illness, particularly in pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. Unlike many other pathogens, Listeria can grow in refrigerated environments, allowing it to spread even when food is properly stored.

Early symptoms may resemble the flu, including fever, muscle pain, and fatigue. But symptoms can progress to vomiting, diarrhea, and neurological issues such as confusion or loss of balance. For pregnant women, the infection can tragically result in miscarriage or stillbirth.

Listeria infections may not appear immediately. Symptoms can develop within a few days to several weeks after exposure, which can make it challenging to identify the source of contamination without careful tracking. Prompt medical attention is critical for those experiencing symptoms, especially for high-risk individuals.

Consumers who develop these symptoms after eating recalled peaches are urged to seek medical care as soon as possible.

Legal and Consumer Safety Implications

Every company involved in the food supply chain, from growers to distributors and retailers, has a legal duty to ensure the safety of its products. When contaminated food reaches the market, it may point to lapses in sanitation, storage, or quality-control systems.

Victims of foodborne illness may be able to recover compensation for:

  • Medical bills and treatment costs
  • Lost wages during recovery
  • Pain, suffering, and emotional distress
  • Funeral expenses in cases of wrongful death

Food contamination lawsuits not only provide financial relief to victims but also help strengthen food safety standards industry-wide.

If you recently purchased peaches from a grocery store and are unsure of the brand, check any labels, packaging, or PLU stickers for the information listed above. The FDA advises consumers to sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come in contact with the recalled fruit to prevent cross-contamination.

If you or a loved one became sick after eating recalled peaches or another contaminated product, you may have legal options.
