Singleton Schreiber Represents Wife of Local Man Killed by Poway Unified School District Bus

SAN DIEGO, CA — Singleton Schreiber is representing the wife of Rene Steiner, a 69-year-old dialysis nurse killed after a district school bus struck him while he was walking his dogs in the Rancho Peñasquitos neighborhood of San Diego on March 10, 2026.

Steiner was crossing at the intersection of Paseo Montalban and Via Cima Bella when a Poway Unified bus, operated by a 76-year-old district driver, turned left into his path. Witnesses found Steiner unconscious and bleeding at the scene. A San Diego Police officer in the area stopped and performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Steiner was transported to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, where he was treated for a skull fracture, subdural hematoma, multiple rib fractures, and bilateral pulmonary contusion. He died from his injuries on March 28, 2026.

"Rene Steiner was a man who spent his life in service to others — his patients, his colleagues, his community," said Domenic Martini, Senior Counsel at Singleton Schreiber and counsel for the Steiner family. "His death was preventable, and his family deserves accountability."

"Our family is forever changed by the loss of Rene. No family should have to go through this. We hope that by coming forward, we can make sure someone answers for what happened and that carrying on as usual without taking action is simply not an option," said Cindy, Rene’s wife.

Following the crash, Poway Unified placed the bus driver on administrative leave and announced a system-wide safety review.
