Why Do Lyft Accidents Happen?
While there are a lot of reasons for Lyft accidents in Maui, some of the most common causes include:
Distracted Driving
Lyft drivers use their phones for nearly every aspect of their job. Whether they’re checking the app for ride requests, finding a drop-off or pick-up location, or using the GPS, they spend a lot of time focused on their phone rather than the act of driving. Drivers can become even more distracted when they’re searching a heavily populated area for a passenger or conversing with a passenger who’s already in the vehicle. The less time a driver spends with their hands on the wheel, looking at the road, and concentrating on traffic, the more likely they are to be involved in a crash.
Speeding
The faster a Lyft driver can complete a ride, the more rides they can complete in a shift. As a result, some Lyft drivers might be inclined to speed to cut down on trip times, complete more rides, and make more money. Unfortunately, speeding is associated with increased crash risks, especially in bad weather and in congested traffic conditions.
Driver Fatigue
Lyft is a supplemental source of income for many drivers. There’s a good chance that a Lyft driver has already worked a full-time job before logging into the Lyft app to work or that they’re trading sleep for extra income. Fatigued driving is arguably just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than drunk driving. Lyft drivers who are fatigued are more likely to suffer from reduced reaction times, take longer to process information on their phones, and to fall asleep while behind the wheel.
Aggressive Driving
Speeding isn’t the only way to complete rides quickly. Lyft drivers have been known to tailgate other motorists, change lanes without signalling and/or without checking their blind spots, ignore red lights and traffic signals, and make illegal turns to cut down on ride times.
Drug and Alcohol Use
Driving for Lyft can be stressful, and some drivers might turn to drugs or alcohol to help them cope. Unfortunately, driving under the influence of a controlled substance or an illicit substance can be related to reduced reaction times, concentration issues, memory problems, drowsiness, and changes in cognition that increase the likelihood of getting into a wreck.

Can I Sue Lyft For Damages After a Rideshare Accident in Maui?
Probably not, since Lyft drivers are independent contractors rather than full-fledged employees. Their contractor status means that Lyft isn’t vicariously liable if the driver is negligent and causes a car accident while driving for Lyft.
You can, however, file a lawsuit against other parties if they were negligent or can be strictly liable for the crash.
This doesn’t mean Lyft will be totally off the hook for your Lyft accident. In Hawaii, rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft are required to maintain insurance coverage to protect passengers and third parties who get hurt in accidents involving their rideshare drivers.
Lyft maintains two policies.
The first is effective when a Lyft driver is waiting to receive a ride request. If the Lyft driver gets into an accident at this point in time, Lyft’s policy will cover up to $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident in bodily injury damages. The policy will also cover up to $25,000 per crash in property damage.
A second policy is triggered when the Lyft driver accepts a ride request through the app. This policy provides up to $1 million in liability coverage for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other crash-related damages. Coverage is effective until the ride is completed in the app.
There is one catch. Lyft’s insurance policies are secondary to other policies that might exist. You’ll usually have to exhaust benefits available through the Lyft driver’s personal car insurance policy before you can recover anything from Lyft’s insurance company.
